Geomorphology and Landscape

Geomorphologically, HNP is part of the Tuul Basin, and the zone of the Orkhon and the Selenge Rivers Basin, in Central Asia (Manibazar and others 1999).

In terms of plant-geography, the park belongs to the south forested steppe zone, in the Mongolian Daurian Mountains. The park is also considered part of the Dundat Khalkh steppe (Manibazar 1996).

HNP lies between 1100 m and 1840 m above sea level. Its lowest point is the Tuul River valley at 1190 m. The highest elevation is the Khushuut Mountain at 1843 m. Specifically, 30% of the park area lies between 1200 m and 1300 m above sea level; 50% lies between 1300 m and 1500 m.

Mountains cover 80% of the park area, characterized by high steep and rocky cliffs. The back slopes are smooth, with soft soil.
